KURRENT FACTS The American Electric Vehicle Company in Ferndale, a new company owned and operated by a diverse group of auto experts with backgrounds in manufacturing, engineering, design, purchasing and marketing, has big plans to capitalize on the expanding alternative energy vehicle market and help reinvent the automotive industry in Michigan. With just over 20 employees at its 25,000-square-foot headquarters and manufacturing facility, the growing company has begun production of the Kurrent NV, an inexpensive, eco-friendly road-vehicle derived from European Micro Car technology. Powered by a 4.1 KW electric motor and four 12- volt lead-gel deep-cycle batteries, the two-person Kurrent NV is a federally certified Neighborhood Electric Vehicle or NEV and is allowed to reach a top speed of 25 mph on any road up to 35 mph. The Kurrent NV will travel up to 40 miles on a single charge and plugs into a standard 110-volt electrical outlet. It costs less than 2 cents per mile to run. With an MSRP of $9,800 the Kurrent NV qualifies for significant federal and some state tax credits for alternative fuel vehicles. As the demand for short-commute “NV’s” (Neighborhood Vehicles) grows, American Electric Vehicle Company plans to expand its workforce to 70 employees and increase production to between 400 and 600 Kurrents a month by mid-2007, with the ultimate goal of 15,000 per year. At present, the two-passenger Kurrent is the only model offered in the US. These preliminary specifications are based on the pre-launch prototype and are subject to change in production vehicles. |
